I would like to invite you to two special opportunities over the next few weeks where, if you are hungry, you can come and be fed.
The first is a lunch called Sentimental Journey, which is this Sunday, May 19th following our worship service in the fellowship hall. This is an event that is one of the special traditions here at Starmount. At this lunch, we gather to honor and celebrate all our members who are 80 years of age and older. The entire congregation is invited to come and help us celebrate these individuals who have contributed so much to the life of this church over the years.
Last year, as I attended my first Sentimental Journey Lunch, I was delighted to meet so many folks who made it a special point to attend this event. I recall speaking with more than one individual who admitted that they just couldn’t get to church all that much anymore. However, they proudly proclaimed that they were founding members of Starmount and that this congregation held a special place in their heart.
I hope you will join me at Sentimental Journey this Sunday, as we honor these wonderful members of our congregation who hold a special place in the collective heart of this church.
Also, if you attend church this Sunday, you will hear a moment for mission about another opportunity to gather for a meal. The Presbyterian Women’s Birthday Dinner will be held on Monday, June 3rd at 6:00pm in the fellowship hall. This dinner is also open to the entire congregation, and will feature Teri Hammer and Scott Jones who will tell us about a local nonprofit organization called “Tiny Houses of Greensboro.”
The Missions Committee has been learning about this organization over the last several months, as they seek to organize an “impact project” for this church; one that will make a significant “impact” in the community. The committee has recently committed funds that will enable Starmount to sponsor the construction of a “tiny house.” Once built, this “tiny house” will enable an individual to transition from homelessness to a stable and safe living environment. I accompanied a few of our mission committee members as we visited one of these “tiny house” neighborhoods in town, and we were quite impressed not only by what we saw, but by the potential that these “tiny houses” have to make a big impact on the lives of those who are in need.
I hope you will join us for both of these opportunities to gather for a meal. I am confident that if you do, not only will your stomachs be filled with good food, but your spirits will be filled with the many good things God is doing in and through the faithful individuals here at Starmount.
In Christ,
Charlie Lee
