The Golden Circle

Both in my newsletter articles and in these weekly email posts, I have referred to some exciting opportunities this fall in which we as a congregation will work together to dream of what the future may hold for our church. The Discernment Team is still hard at work crafting a process by which all will have the opportunity to participate and share their perspective on the direction God may be leading us in the future.

While the process is still awaiting completion and Session approval, there is one concept that we can begin to share that will be central to our discussions. This concept is one that comes from a book called “Start With Why” by Simon Sinek, and it is called the “Golden Circle.”

At a basic level, the concept of the Golden Circle argues that often organizations know what they do, or even how they do it, but most never have a clear understanding of why they do what they do. He argues that successful organizations have a clear understanding of their “why”, and they allow that to shape their culture and drive their actions.

Since we will be using the concept of the Golden Circle and its terminology this fall, I would like to ask each of you to click here to watch an 18 minute TED Talk by Simon Sinek in which he explains the concept more fully.

The Session learned about this concept at their January retreat. They used it to reflect on the very core aspects of what makes our congregation special, and how we might remain faithful and consistent in those elements as we think about where God may be leading us in the future. I am excited to continue this conversation with each of you this fall as we together seek to understand our collective calling and dream of a vibrant future for Starmount Presbyterian Church.

In Christ,
Charlie Lee
