What Breaks Your Heart?

What breaks your heart?  We will explore this question on Sunday as we gather for worship on the 2nd Sunday of Lent.  The New Testament scripture we will be reading is an unfamiliar one for most of us.  In it, Jesus laments over the city of Jerusalem and expresses his dismay over their habit of resisting God as God attempts to draw them close.  As Jesus thinks about the position of Jerusalem, his heart breaks with grief and sorrow.
As we reflect on the state of the world around us, I am certain that many of us can identify situations or realities that break our hearts.  These are the things that keep us up at night, the things that make us shake our heads when we see them on TV or read about them online, the things that are seared into our souls when we experience them first hand.
During the season of Lent we are encouraging everyone at Starmount to participate in the practice of “paying attention.”  In our worship services, we are engaging in the practice by highlighting an element of the liturgy.  This Sunday, we will be focused on our “Offering.”
In addition to collecting our financial gifts during this portion of the service, everyone will also be given the opportunity to place something else in the offering plate.  Part of your bulletin insert will have a place where you can write down a lament.  It will also have a place for you to write down something that you can do in response to your lament.
I invite you to spend some time in prayer this weekend, focused on the things that break your heart and what you might be able to do in response as an offering of service to God.
